Suddenly, I realized that I am in trouble. After a skirmish, I sent the shotgun guy to kill an already unconscious Martian, and he told me that he is out of ammo. So I checked everyone, and realized that I have 21 debilitating ammo left, and two laser shots. For the whole team. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, except that I knew that there is at least one Martian left, the target itself, who I have to render unconscious for capturing. And this is far from enough to do it. Also, I forgot to equip the squad members with melee weapons, which is a rare occasion, but it does happen from time to time.
Now, I had two options: either load the save that I created before the mission, and give the squad some extra stuff, or use the Martian weapons. As I was doing this mission for over an hour now, and it was already bedtime, I didn't want to do the first. On the other hand, the Martians use EM weapons, which must be researched first, and then the soldiers must be trained to be able to use them. Obviously, I haven't done that yet.
Soo.. one of the options is not an option. The other one is something I don't want to do.. what now?
Well, one of those Martians earlier almost killed me with something that looked like a lightsaber. I've never seen anything like that before, but it was a melee weapon, so it might not require EM training. Let's send a soldier there, and check.
"Boss, the thing is called Light Sword, and I have some good and bad news. Let's start with the bad news: it does require EM Weapon Handling, so I am not able to use it now. But there is another thingy here, called Martian Blade, which is a simple melee weapon that I can use!"
After a bit of rummaging around I found three of these, equipped my most capable soldiers with them and sent them after the target. Quickly found it, saved, and attacked it with everyone.
The second hit killed it, which means that the (capture) mission was failed. Ok, reload, try again. I quickly realized that sending more than one soldier is an overkill (literally), but even the weakest of the three was able to kill it with just one critical hit. So I started experimenting.
One hit then shooting with a gun: Didn't work, the gun was too weak.
One hit and trying to lure it close to a previously placed mine: It wouldn't come close to the mine.
Just trying to lure it close to the mine without hitting it first: Same.
Trying to hit it twice and hoping for random low damage: Worked. After about the fifth time.
So, finally, I captured it. Now the only thing is to move it back to the evac zone.. except that it is not able to move. I don't exactly know why, (either a bug, or it was too damaged) but I couldn't order it move, so there was only one option left: To kill every enemy, so that I win without going back to the evac zone. Luckily, only two very weak enemies were still alive, and after killing those, I won.
(Btw, I've tried to estimate the hours I've spent with this game, and it is coming to about a 100 hours already. And it's still not finished. Not bad..)
These posts have me very curious. So I have to ask: do you suggest playing through the series from the beginning or jump in with the latest?
ReplyDeleteWell.. I have only some foggy memories about the first one, but iirc it wasn't a really good game. The story was great, but the gameplay was lacking. The second and the third are very good games, I'd certainly advise everyone to give them a go, but if you can play only one, it should be the last. It is perfectly enjoyable without any knowledge of the previous ones...
