Spiral Stairs: Blow 'em up!

Lighthouse in Glasgow
From Wikipedia
Spiral stairs are probably the most spectacular indoor structures in a building. They also provide you and the designer with the ability of minimizing the space you need to use for getting from one level of the building to the other. Thus, they are present in most fantasy mmo games.

My only problem is that I hate them. Deeply.

I find it rather hard to go up or down, if I have to watch out for enemies at the same time. More often than not I simply jump down or go around if possible, so that I don't need to use them. I actually got so used to doing this, that one of my low level characters died because of it in Ogrimmar. More than once.

Is there anything that's even half as annoying in MMO architecture?

  1. Doh. Blogspot ate my first attempt to comment here.

I am getting confused by all sorts of 3D structures, be it city like or build with plants. There are games with rooms or zones which build a labyrinth in 3D with various platforms at various levels, which can only be reach from a limited number of other platforms. Very confusing. To bad game designers don't have to follow the rules of physics, or at least let their zone organically grow like a city, who developed around certain traffic patterns, or the lifecycle of buildings within a city

As an aside, could you please verify if commenting with a wordpress ID is possible? All I got was "Your OpenID credentials could not be verified". Perhaps you can enable the name/url option.

    1. Yes, I find artificial cities really ugly. Take, for example, the desert quest hubs: More often than not, there is no water or food around anywhere. How do these people live there?

About your side question, ID is set to "Registered User - includes OpenID" for whose comments to accept. This might be an issue with Google, I'm afraid. :(

  2. As a student of architecture, I find a lot of things annoying with especially fantasy architecture. My main gripe would be that the arrangement of rooms and spaces often makes no sense at all, the designer has only designed a stage for combat, or a hang out place for few npc's.

I'm talking about areas where there is a long corridor and few rooms around it, and not even locked doors giving a clue toward the other rooms in the building. Simply black empty space on the minimap.

That is understandable since they are designing a game, not a real structure to be built, and want to keep a certain pace to the gameplay. But for once I'd like to see it done properly.

  3. Luckily I am ignorant about the principles of architecture. If I wouldn't be, I'm sure I'd be as annoyed as you.

  4. This post made me laugh a little. I get that most games are design buildings to be play spaces, not living or working spaces. But sometimes they get really silly.

There is one instance where I like a good spiral staircase: in a tall tower where the side is open to the interior. Pushing enemies over the edge can be hilarious.
