The Broadcasted War

I have three main issues with the Secret War:

  • It's the opposite of 'Secret'
  • The gameplay is shallow
  • The UI is lacking

Let me elaborate on these points:

Opposite of Secret:

If something is called Secret, I expect secrecy. I expect Mystery. I expect surprises. The Secret War is, on the other hand, very much "in your face", it requires you to spread the propaganda on Facebook. One of my friends, who, by the way, was very excited about The Secret World, just got fed up and blocked the whole thing out of annoyance. And I am talking about how the game is now; I can't imagine how much spam it generated before the overhaul.
There are two solutions for this issue: Either name it something else (imho that would be lame) or make it more mysterious. What do I mean by that? Make the propaganda less obvious. Instead of big posters, make the propaganda almost hidden, but make it in a way that it will raise curiosity. Like, quizzes or very unexpected (but visually pleasing) images

Shallow Gameplay:

In this setting I can absolutely imagine two goals for the game: One is to make the player more hooked up on the Secret World, and the other one is to provide a context for the Secret World. This game is none of that. What I do from time to time is that I log in, click on a border country, check the numbers whether this country is any close to change owner, and if it is, I send in my agents. It takes about 2 minutes, half of which is the loading of the flash stuff. Then, for about an hour, I have nothing to do.
Also, what is really annoying is the fact that I am in no way motivated to keep any country that is ours; the mechanics, as far as I see, work in a way that you only get points when the owner of the country changes (where your agents are). So, the best you can do is a see saw game when you let the enemy take a territory, and then you (the faction, that is) take it back, rinse and repeat.
How could this be better? First of all, offer me "quests", instead of the simplistic action of sending in the agents. That would give me more immersion, I'd have the feeling of doing something. Even the possibility of injuries (that would prevent the agent from to be deployed) would be welcome. Just make it more sophisticated.
Also, make faction successes matter; if my faction is the biggest, give me points for it (but only if I was actively playing today)

Poor UI:

Don't get me wrong: The UI is a piece of art, visually very pleasing, I simply love it from the first time I've seen it. Also, the music is exactly the right kind, moody and motivating at once.
But I have the usual 'but' here.
In a strategy game, information is king. The more information you can get with a simple glance, the better the UI is. (Which means that a cluttered, overloaded interface is exactly as bad as a simple one with a small amount of information)

The following information is in the system:
  • Raw data: Current owner, faction scores
  • Predictive data: Faction is about to lose a country, Scores are close to each other (which is basically the same)
  • Historical data: Changes in the last few turns
  • Personal data: Your agents' positions, Remaining time until next deployment
For now, let's just work with this. How much do I see of this if I look at the map?
Two.
Current owner is obvious from the colour. About to lose is sometimes shown for a country. The others are not present and much of them cannot even be seen in any way.
That's pretty bad.
Also, the Flash. REALLY?! I've tried to load it three times on my mobile, without any luck. Low interaction games (such as Secret War) should be available on the mobile.

To conclude all of the above, this game is a stillborn Phoenix. The potential was there to be something great, but now there is only sadness and 'what-if'-s.
My opinion is that this game is downright damaging for The Secret World. It may or may not be a good game, but based on my experiences with the Secret War, I'll rather buy GW2 than TSW. And I feel sorry for this. :(
